The first line of any paragraph should tell the reader about the rest of the paragraph. Topic sentences tell the reader what the main idea of the paragraph is. It acts as a sign post, telling the reader what to expect in the rest of the paragraph. A topic sentence is normally made up of two elements: the topic and the idea. The topic will normally be a noun or noun phrase. The idea is the sub-context that they will be tackling within the topic.
